GDTs / Gas Plasma Arrestors Overview
GDTs (Gas Discharge Tubes) or Gas Plasma Arrestors are used in circuit protection to safeguard against voltage surges, spikes, and transient overvoltages. They operate by ionizing gas within the tube to create a conductive path, diverting excess current away from sensitive electronic components. GDTs are commonly employed in telecommunication systems, power distribution networks, and electronic equipment to prevent damage from lightning strikes, switching surges, and other electrical disturbances. Basic GDTs with lower voltage ratings and current capabilities are generally more affordable. High-performance GDTs with higher voltage ratings, faster response times, and additional features may command higher prices. When purchasing these components, determine the required voltage and current ratings suitable for your application's protection needs. Choose GDTs with appropriate response times and clamping voltages to effectively divert transient overvoltages.
